WELCOME TO THE CRAVEN COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY

The Origin Of "GOP"

A favorite of headline writers, GOP dates back to the 1870s and '80s. The abbreviation was cited in a New York Herald story on October 15, 1884; "' The G.O.P. Doomed,' shouted the Boston Post.... The Grand Old Party is in condition to inquire...."

But what GOP stands for has changed with the times. In 1875 there was a citation in the Congressional Record referring to "this gallant old party," and , according to Harper's Weekly, in the Cincinnati Commercial in 1876 to "Grand Old Party."

Perhaps the use of "the G.O.M." for Britain's Prime Minister William E. Gladstone in 1882 as " the Grand Old Man" stimulated the use of GOP in the United States soon after.

In early motorcar days, GOP took on the term "get out and push." During the 1964 presidential campaign, "Go-Party" was used briefly, and during the Nixon Administration, frequent references to the "generation of peace" had happy overtones. In line with moves in the '70s to modernize the party, Republican leaders took to referring to the "grand old party," harkening back to a 1971 speech by President Nixon at the dedication of the Eisenhower Republican Center in Washington, D.C.

Indeed, the "grand old party" is an ironic term, since the Democrat Party was organized some 22 years earlier in 1832.

Merry Christmas From Chad Adams

From:

Dear Republicans,

Christmas is a time to give thanks and the end of a year is a time to reflect. In the hearts and minds of Republicans it should be a time of great enthusiasm and optimism. There is nothing more exciting that optimism. It inspires and motivates, it brings people together, it reminds us why we engage in this great debate to rekindle the fires of freedom that lie within all of us.

The political left in this state and nation has attempted to usurp more personal freedom than at any time in our history. It has done so without regard to public opinion or the Constitution. On healthcare, climate change and debt limits our Congress has turned a deaf ear to the impact on our already struggling economy.

In our own state, outrageous regulations, $800 million in new taxes, multi-million dollar incentive deals gone bad, and massive investigations into potential criminal wrongdoing by our former governor have damaged our economy and out ability to trust government in general and that is our call.

It is imperative that Republicans remind our fellow North Carolinians that our party has is relevant and can make a difference. The Republican Party is not just another party with the same problems. It needs to show our state that it has a vision for the future.

I'm hopeful that we will see that vision moving forward. The policies enacted under the past twenty years of democrat rule have not made us better; they have created a far more heavily taxed, regulated and unemployed state. In spite of this, out legislature continued to move farther to the left every day. So far so that several high profile senate democrats aren't even running next year.

We are the party of conservative principles that are often forgotten. We are the party that understands you cannot tax your way to prosperity. We are the party that understands the destructive power of over regulating destroys jobs and hurts our economy. We are the party that understands that personal freedom makes us stronger, not weaker. And we are the party that can restore our great state by bringing together our conservative roots with the conservative elements of our party. In so doing we will have a great year and set the stage for a fantastic decade of conservative leadership.

Why is all this important?

It is critical that we win in 2010. Every election and decision made over the next decade will start with who gets elected in 2010. Members of our NC House and Senate will be drawing the maps that determine how our districts will look. It is a must that Republicans gain control of at least one, if not both, houses of our legislature.

I am hopeful that this note finds all of you experiencing a Merry Christmas and finding the optimism and determination to work and win next year. I have appreciated your friendship and your support and I will never forget what you have meant to me and my family.

God bless you all, and I look forward to working with you in the coming year.

Merry Christmas,

Chad Adams

Legislative Report---November 2009

There are several legislative issues that we all should be aware of and be pro-active on.

1) Healthcare Reform- We all know that Speaker Nancy Pelosi somehow managed to line up the votes for passage of the 2000-plus page House Bill. Next comes the Senate. Please continue your calls and letters to "Blue Dog" Democrats on the fence. And, call for the chance to actually read the final bill before it is offered up for a vote.

2) Cap and Trade (also known as Crap and Tax) is likely to be kept quiet by the Dems until they have an opportunity to quickly ram it through behind our backs.

3) Card check is still lurking in the background. It would prohibit workers from voting for union representatives in a secret ballot. Union bosses would then be allowed to intimidate those who voted against the preferred representative. There is also a second part to this legislation. If union leaders can drag out negotiations with an employer for more than 90 days, by making outrageous demands, the Obama administration bureaucrats will have the power to write a new contract, and force its terms on the workers. So, Big Labor wants to strip workers of the right to a secret ballot, and also of the right of companies to write their own contracts.

4) You'll recall the recent Congressional passing of a bill authorizing defense spending. This bill also contained hate crimes legislation, to include sexual orientation and gender identity. All the Republicans and two Democrats voted against it, but it passed. The reason it was attached to the defense bill was so that Liberals can now accuse Republicans of voting against the troops.

5) The Fairness in Representation Act (HR 3797) introduced by N.C. Rep. Virginia Foxx would require the Census Bureau to determine the number of illegal immigrants. Currently, the census does not distinguish between undocumented immigrants and those who are here legally. The census form already asks the person's race, age, and gender, so asking for citizenship shouldn't be labeled intrusive.

6) Then there was the congressional decision to de-fund ACORN from any taxpayer money. But unfortunately that move was only good until October 31st, after which the money started flowing again to fund their radical far-left agenda.

7) The House has already passed a bill to nationalize the student loan program, and has sent it on to the Senate. Instead of using subsidies and guarantees to private lenders to encourage lending, HR 3221 would nationalize the process. It also creates nine new programs and increases federal government takeover of early education, higher education, school construction, and more.

8) HR 45 was recently introduced by Democrat Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois. This measure calls for all handgun owners to submit an application to the federal government that shall include a photo, an address, a thumbprint, a completed firearm safety test, private mental health records and a fee.

Here in North Carolina:

1) Watch for a final decision on the early release of some of our state's most heinous criminals. Gov. Perdue is considering this Court of Appeals decision on laws passed on the 1970's. Consider the effect on the families of the victims of these criminals.

2) North Carolina HB 1268 provides a referendum on a constitutional amendment to protect private property rights from abusive condemnation. It was sponsored by 52 Republicans and 31 Democrats. But, somehow the Democrat leadership was able to remove the bill from the floor and send it back to committee, thus killing it for this session. If the amendment had been ratified, we citizens could have voted on May 10, 2010, on whether to make it a part of our state Constitution, keeping local government from seizing private property and then transferring it to others for a private purpose. HB 1268 would have ended this practice in North Carolina. Our state is the only state with no constitutional guarantee of a jury trial in these eminent domain cases.

Legislative Report-- October 2009

At last count, President Obama has appointed nearly 40 people, each having a different mission, and wielding lots of influence for special interests, without the normal accountability, transparency, or checks and balances. In general, using czars instead of cabinet secretaries to coordinate high priority initiatives puts a unique stamp on Obama's administration. But it includes a lot of risks. The White House staff has admitted that implementing this system includes a lot of "making it up as we go along". A White House consumed with an unlimited agenda appears out of control and more "in over their head" than "in charge". Even Time Magazine worries that Obama may be subverting Congressional control and acting like a tyrant.

So, let's see what we know:

1) The AfPak czar (that's Afghanistan and Pakistan) is Richard Holbrook. He coordinates military and civilian efforts in that area.
2) The AIDS/HIV czar is Jeffrey Crowley, a Peace Corps alum and former teacher in Swaziland who has worked with AIDS victims for 14 years.
3) The Auto czar used to be Steve Ratner. He is a big Democrat fundraiser, founder of an investment firm, and well-known negotiator and deal maker. He admitted from the beginning that he had no experience in the auto industry and gave very heavy-handed treatment to lenders at Chrysler, doing pretty much everything wrong. He resigned after six months after being accused of allegedly having made payments to secure business deals involving New York State's large public pension fund earlier in his career. The office is now being run by Manufacturing czar Ron Bloom.
4) The Auto Recovery czar is Ed Montgomery, a former U. of Maryland dean. He admitted he had no business experience, especially in the auto business, but Detroit was begging for help. He will focus on funneling federal funds to people hurt by the industry meltdown. I guess the Cash for Clunkers program came under his czardom, and we know how well that worked. In a recent interview I heard that giving the $4500 rebate cost the government $10,000 each.
5) The Bank Bailout czar is Herbert Allison. He began his career at Merrill Lynch where he became president and COO, and most recently served as president and CEO of Fannie Mae! Doesn't that give us all a lot of confidence in his achieving financial stability?
6) The Border czar is Alan Bersin. His experience is as a U.S. Attorney and as San Diego School Superintendent.
7) The Chesapeake Bay czar is J. Charles Fox.
8) The Climate czar is Todd Stern. He's a former Clinton administration negotiator at the Kyoto and the Buenos Aires climate talks.
9) The Communications czarina is Anita Dunn. She's the one who recently proclaimed Mao Tse Tung, a killer of 70 million people, one of her favorite philosophers. She also claimed that Fox News is a wing of the Republican Party.

10) The Compensation czar is Kenneth Fineberg. He's in charge of the TARP program, Troubled Assets Recovery Fund. He has been in the news for demanding the salaries and bonuses of bailed out companies to be cut by as much as 90%. The initial reaction of many people is that no one should receive those outrageously high salaries, but why should the government have any say in what corporate America does with its legal profits? This is still a capitalistic society. The Democrats say they stand for the "little" folks, but Fineberg's bonus cuts hit not just the executives of a company but all the employees down to the so-called non-essential secretarial pools and maintenance men who rely on their annual bonuses.

11) The Cyber Security czar is to be announced soon, with the leading candidate being Frank Kramer. Supposedly the Dept. of Homeland Security is in charge of this office, but some say the power is held by the NSA and we should not leave it in the hands of a super secret intelligence agency. Sounds like someone is a little paranoid.

12) The Domestic Violence czarina is Lynn Rosenthal. She is a former director of the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

13) The Drug czar is R. Gil Kerlikowski. He is a former Seattle Police Chief, known for down-playing drug busts in his city, and who has a son with known drug problems.

14) The Economics czar is Paul Volker. How's that working out for us?

15) The Faith-based czar is Joshua DuBois, a 26 year old man whose previous job was working for Rep. Rush Holt, a Democrat from New Jersey.

16) The Global Warming (or Climate and Energy) czarina is Carole Browner. She is tied to the Commission for a Sustainable World Society, a socialist group which believes "rich countries must shrink their economies by $300 billion a year to address climate change". Interestingly, the Socialist International Group, which fully supports socialism and is harshly critical of U.S. policies, has quietly removed Ms. Browner's name and bio from their web page.

17) The Great Lakes czar is Cameron Davis, a Chicago environmentalist. You may be interested in knowing there are already 140 programs dealing with the Great Lakes environment.

18) The Green Jobs czar was Van Jones, who recently resigned under pressure. He was a California civil rights activist with many left wing views. He is the one who signed a petition that stated his belief that the Bush administration was behind the 9/11 attacks.

19) The Guantanamo Closure czar is Daniel Fried, a career diplomat who wants our allies and Yemen to take the detainees. Another program which is not quite working as planned.

20) The Healthcare czarina is Nancy Ann DeParle. She is another Clinton administration member. She sits on the boards of several health corporations which leads to conflicts of interest. The issue of not prosecuting patients or suppliers of medical marijuana is in the news now, and so begins the slide down the slippery slope. Rahm Emanual's brother Ezekiel Emanual is also involved with this office. Enough said!21) The Information czar is Vivek Kundre, on whom I have no information. 22) The internet czarina is Susan Crawford. She wants to see the government take over the internet, destroying private control. She would use $1.2 billion of the stimulus money for broadband. President Obama has said he will take a back seat to no one in his commitment to net neutrality. This is one more step toward socialism. Americans for Prosperity is one group leading the fight against this because, as long as the internet is free, conservatives can use it to communicate, educate, and organize. 23) The Intelligence czar is Dennis Blair. He is a retired admiral who has held posts with the NSC and the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon, and at the CIA as an associate director for military support. His conflict of interest comes from serving on the boards of two defense contractors while studying bids for the F-22 fighter. 24) The Iran czar is Dennis Ross. 25) The Manufacturing czar is Ron Bloom. 26) The Media Diversity czar is Mark Lloyd, a political leftist who used to work for CNN and NBC. His job is to get rid of talk radio. He is a great admirer of Hugo Chavez who took over all private radio and TV stations in Venezuela. Mark Lloyd believes that all media should be public media.

27) The Middle East czar is George Mitchell. He recently returned from another attempt to get Israel and Palestine to resume peace talks, but, to no one's surprise, it failed.

28) The Performance czar is Jeffrey Zientz. I'm not sure I want to know what his job is.

29) And now we come to the Regulatory czar, Cas Sunstein. This man believes that the government should be required to fund abortion with taxpayers money, that we should abolish marriage and go to civil unions, that we should ban hunting entirely, and that we should take organs of terminally ill patients with or without permission. He would change the rule about organ donation to a system where one must opt out rather that opt in for donating. This man wants to change the interpretation of the Constitution by 2020. He has written a book called the Second Bill of Rights, a radical set of welfare rights for every citizen. Among these mandates are the right to a useful job, enough money to provide adequately for a family, the right of every farmer to make a decent living, a decent home for everyone, adequate medical care, protection from unemployment, a good education, and the right to act against unfair competition. He has stated that America would move naturally toward socialism but we are held back by the white majority which opposes welfare since it largely benefits blacks and Hispanics. This is your Regulatory czar!                  30) Then we go to the Safe School czar, Kevin Jennings. He has been under attack recently for advocating the teaching of homosexuality to all students from kindergarten up. He has expressed admiration for Harry Hay, one of the first advocates for NAMBLA, the North American Man Boy Love Association. He has recounted the story of a sophomore boy who came to him to tell of a sexual relationship with an older man. Even though required by law as a teacher to report this behavior to the boy's parents, school administrator, or the police, he encouraged the boy and said he hoped he knew how to use condoms. He has shown disregard for parental rights and our children's well being, yet the President has chosen him to keep our schools safe.                                         31) The Science czar is John Holdren, who also holds long time leftist views. His goal is population control. To achieve this he believes in forced abortion and compulsory sterilization, and says we must all lower our consumption levels. He has stated that abortions could save the planet. After all, embryos are just a handful of cells.                                                              32) The Stimulus Accountability czar is Earl Devaney. 33) The Technology czar is Aneesh Chopra.                                                                                                  34) The Terrorism czar is John Brennan, a former Associate Director of the National Counterterrorism Center. He is working toward an increased role for Hezbollah in Lebanon, making him highly unacceptable to Israel.                      35) The Urban Affairs czar is Adolfo Carrion.                                                      36) The War czar is Douglas Lute.                                                                     37) The Weapons czar is Ashton Carter.                                                            38) The Weapons of Mass Destruction czar is Gary Samore.                             39) The Weatherization czar is Gil Sperling. Apparently, these last five czars have yet to do something scandalous to get in the news. I don't know if there will be more appointees, but Obama appears to satisfy the needs of any special interest group by naming a czar. I have heard that those with unclear responsibilities and relatively low budgets are referred to as "czardines". Many of these people have not been subjected to even a basic FBI background check. As advisors to Obama they can claim executive privilege if ever subpoenaed to testify before Congress. They are not subject to transparency laws, and they answer to no one but the President.

There is an effort currently underway in Congress led by Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) to force the czars to testify before Congress with respect to their authority and responsibilities. And Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) has introduced legislation that mandates czars be appointed only with advice and consent of the Senate.

Laura Ingraham has coined the term Freedom Czar, and is even selling T-shirts and ball caps with the logo. That is who we all are. We are Freedom czars. Even though we are not on the White House payroll we must assume the authority to take back our country, one freedom party at a time. Just repeat the goal---November 2010, November 2010, November 2010.

You are all aware of the critical events taking place in Washington right now. Congress is so motivated to pass a healthcare bill that they may well attempt to attach it bit by bit to other bills when they think we're not looking. Just as Senator John Kerry slipped a $20 million piece of pork into the $360 billion defense bill for the Ted Kennedy Library. The same goes for Cap and Trade. Senator Burr and Rep. Jones have promised to vote against both , but please keep writing to Senator Hagan to vote against these monstrosities.
